Course Description for 6th Grade Special Education Program
WHAT SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES LOOK LIKE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL:
Welcome to Butler Middle School Special Education services. Your child may receive academic services in one or more of the following classes: co-taught math, co-taught English/Language Arts, Directed Studies Math, and/or Directed Studies Reading. All students will receive their core instruction in a general education classroom. Those enrolled in the Directed Studies classes will receive extra support in goal areas that are documented in their Individual Education Program (IEP). I work with the general education teachers to provide accommodations and modifications to the general education curriculum. Accommodations and modifications help to "even the playing field" for my students that are not proficient in the skills their classmates have already mastered. I am very excited to work with your child this year. I believe we will have a successful and fun year together.
DIRECTED STUDIES CLASSES:
The Directed Studies classes will be an extension or immediate application of skills to learning activities/assignments by incorporating topics from English/Language Arts and Math. The remainder of this course will focus on supporting students in their content area classes. During this class, I will pre-teach, re-teach and review concepts, model and teach strategies that give students tools to access and successfully complete the work required of them in general education classes.
DIRECTED STUDIES COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Use appropriate learning and school behaviors before, during, and after class.
2. Apply time management skills.
3. Plan and complete classroom and homework assignments effectively.
4. Keep classroom materials (from all classes) organized.
5. Collect, interpret, and analyze their own data.
6. Understand the purpose and various components of their IEP.
7. Apply appropriate test-taking strategies.
8. Apply reading comprehension strategies to assignments.
9. Use and apply note-taking strategies.
10. Apply writing strategies.
11. Access and use reference materials.
12. Apply skills and strategies from the directed studies class in content area classes.

The Directed Studies courses will cover the following topics:
· Introduction to middle school
· Appropriate school behaviors for effective learning
· Goal setting
· Data collection
· Know your IEP
· Organizational skills
· Note-taking
· Accessing textbooks
· Mnemonic devices
· Completing assignments
· Research skills
· Test taking
· Participating in discussions
· Math strategies
· Writing strategies
· Reading strategies
DIRECTED STUDIES GRADING STANDARDS:
Student achievement in this course will be measured using multiple assessment tools including observation, work samples, presentations, oral tests, and written tests.
Grades will be determined by demonstration of the following:
· Progress in IEP goals
· Classroom participation
· Assessments
· Completing weekly grade checks
· Planner checks
There will be no extra-credit. Students may re-do any assignment or test to receive a better grade. Our goal is to master the material. We will work together to achieve mastery.
MATERIALS NEEDED FOR DIRECTED STUDIES CLASS:
Students should come to class prepared each day with the following:
· Pencil
· Lined paper
· Planner (Furnished by the school)
· Assignments from other classes that they need assistance with
